Current Initiatives and Activities of the Greater Lafayette League of Women Voters

New "Making Democracy Work" Award: On September 17, 2008, the League of Women Voters of Greater Lafayette will honor one woman with the inaugural Making Democracy Work Award. Join us for this event (See calendar).

Observer Corps: The League has been a champion of government transparency since our founding in 1920, and it is one of our core principles and a vital part of our mission. We are establishing an Observer Corps, members who are willing to commit one year to attending all the meetings of one local governmental board or commission and report on the business that was transacted at each meeting. Click on "Observer Corps" at left for more information.

Water Quality Program: On Tuesday, July 29 at 7 pm, Dr. Jane Frankenberger, Water Quality Extension Specialist and Professor of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at Purdue University, will present current water quality issues with a focus on the Wabash River. The League of Women Voters has a longstanding involvement with water and the Wabash River, and has a local position promoting improvement of the water quality of the Wabash River and its environment, recreational opportunities along the Wabash River Corridor, and environmentally responsible development.

Non-Partisan Voter Information: The League helps citizens make democracy work by becoming informed about candidates and issues, and by casting their vote. The League is also active in election reform to make sure that the process is transparent, fair, and accessible to all citizens.
